Punk Fashion, History in Brief;
Like many alternative fashions, this stemmed, at least in part, from music. Punk rock, actually. It probably appeared first around the 1970s along with Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren,. It’s changed quite a bit over time: for example, at one time feared symbols such as swastikas were common for a shock effect; these days the anti-fascist punk movement is more popular.
Today Punk Looks Like:
Liberty spikes and Mohawks are very common. The head may also be shaved (my favorite!) but this can create confusion with skinheads. Leather jackets and plaid are very common objects. Clothing that has been intentionally torn and sometimes held together with safety pins are frequent. Bondage, metal spikes, and hair dyes sometimes create confusion with the industrial or goth scenes.
Judging Punk Fashion;
If you partake in this fashion, don’t be surprised if people start walking to the other side of the street when they see you coming. Furthermore, people who consider themselves punks as opposed to simply appreciated the fashion are likely to call you a poser. Believe it or not, just by dressing a certain way, you can create enemies out of people that dress similarly. Go figure.
